Which Husband Will a Woman Be with in Paradise?

By Mauvli Muhammad Yusuf

For many years people have been asking me with whom a woman will be if she had more than one husband and I have not been able to give an answer.  However, now I found two hadith that indicate explicitly that she will be with her last husband.  Ibn ʿAsākir reports in his book Tārikh Dimishq under his biographical discussion of Umm al-Dardāʾ al-Ṣughrā,

Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān proposed to Umm al-Dardāʾ after the death of Abū al-Dardāʾ, so Umm al-Dardāʾ said, “The Messenger of Allah k said, ‘A woman will be with her last husband,’ so I am not going to marry anyone after Abū al-Dardāʾ so that I can marry him in Paradise”

Ibn ʿAsākir noted that the hadith was ḥasan.  The love of Umm al-Dardāʾ for her husband Abū al-Dardāʾ because of his extreme piety and otherworldliness (zuhd) is a famous matter.Ḥāfiẓ al-Baihaqī reported in his al-Sunan al-Kubrā,

Ḥudhaifah b said to his wife, “If you wish to be my wife in Paradise, then do not marry anyone after me because a woman will be with the last of her husbands of this world, and for this reason Allah prohibited the wives of the Prophet k from marrying after him because they will be his wives in Paradise.”

In A Lion’s Cage-An Example of True Belief In What Allah Ordains For You

By Ustadh Abdus Shakur Brooks

The Sufi Imam Al-Muhasabi (234 A.H Baghdad) in his Al-Risalah Al-Mustarshideen said:

” Know that you have not tasted the sweetness of Iman until you believe in the qadr [of Allah] completely; its good and its bad”

Abdul Fattah Abu Guddah mentions in his footnotes on this famous work that Abu Ali Al-Rudhabari (313 A.H) who was one of the earlier Sufi Imams, was thrown in a lion’s pit because he gave advice to the ruler of Egypt Ibn Tuloon . When placed in the pit the lion sniffed around him but did not harm him. When he was asked what his heart was thinking about when the lion was sniffing around him, He replied:

“I was thinking about the difference of opinion between the scholars concerning the saliva of carnivores [regarding whether or not it was an impurity or not].” Continue reading ‘In A Lion’s Cage-An Example of True Belief In What Allah Ordains For You’
